Mutianyu vs Badaling: Which Great Wall Section Should You Visit?
Both are spectacular, restored, family-friendly sections within day-trip range of Beijing. But they deliver very different days. Having driven guests to both for years, here’s our honest comparison.
The 30-second verdict
Choose Mutianyu for fewer crowds, denser watchtowers, forested mountain scenery and the famous toboggan ride down. Choose Badaling if you want the most historically famous section, the easiest access without a car (it has a direct train), or full wheelchair accessibility. For most international travellers we recommend Mutianyu — it’s the section we’d take our own families to.

What a Mutianyu day actually looks like
Our 10-hour private day trip leaves your hotel around 08:00, beats the tour buses to the cable car, gives you 3–4 unhurried hours on the Wall (walk towers 14 → 20 for the best ridgeline views), lunch in a village restaurant below, and has you back in the city for dinner. Tickets and cable car can be pre-booked for +$40 per car so you skip the queues.
Can you do the Wall without a car?
Badaling: yes — the suburban railway runs from Beijing North/Huangtudian. Mutianyu: not practically; there is no direct train or metro, and public bus routings take 3+ hours each way with transfers. That’s why nearly everyone visits Mutianyu with a driver — and why we run it as our most-booked day trip.
Other sections worth knowing
- Jinshanling (130 km): half-restored, half-wild — the hiker’s choice.
- Simatai: the only section open for night visits, paired with Gubei Water Town.
- Jiankou: unrestored and genuinely dangerous — for experienced hikers only.
