The Best Time to Visit Beijing: A Month-by-Month Guide

Beijing is a four-season city with two clear golden windows. Here’s how the weather, crowds and prices really behave through the year — and when we’d tell our own friends to come.

The short answer

Late September to late October is Beijing at its finest: dry crisp air, blue skies, and the Fragrant Hills and Great Wall valleys turning red and gold. The runner-up is April to mid-May, when the city’s parks bloom and temperatures sit in the comfortable 15–25°C band. Both windows book out fast — reserve hotels and drivers early.

Dates to avoid (or plan around)

Chinese New Year (late Jan–mid Feb, dates shift yearly): many family restaurants close; sights are open but transport is stretched.
Labour Day, 1–5 May and National Day Golden Week, 1–7 October: the busiest sightseeing days of the whole year — Badaling in particular is best avoided; Mutianyu absorbs crowds far better.

Local tip: air quality is dramatically better than a decade ago, but if a rare hazy day lands on your Great Wall slot, a private driver lets you flip your itinerary same-day — museums today, Wall tomorrow.

What to book in each window

In autumn and spring, prioritise the outdoor icons: the Great Wall at Mutianyu, the Summer Palace and Temple of Heaven, and an evening hutong and roast duck crawl. In winter, lean indoors: the Forbidden City, the National Museum and hotpot dinners.

Getting around
