Pudong Airport (PVG) to Shanghai: Every Option Compared
PVG sits 35–45 km east of the places you actually want to be. After a long-haul landing, your choice of transfer sets the tone for the whole trip — here’s how the maglev, metro, taxi and private car really stack up.
All four options
| Option | Time to People’s Square area | Rough cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maglev + Metro | ~45–55 min (8 min maglev + transfers) | ~¥55–60 pp | The novelty — 431 km/h! |
| Metro Line 2 all the way | ~75–90 min | ~¥8 pp | Tight budgets, no luggage |
| Airport taxi rank | ~50–70 min | ~¥180–230 (metered) | Spontaneity; Mandarin helps |
| Private transfer (pre-booked) | ~50–70 min, door to door | from US$70 per car, fixed | Families, luggage, first visits, late arrivals |
The maglev: ride it, but know its limits
The Shanghai Maglev is a genuine bucket-list ride — 431 km/h on a magnetic cushion. But it only goes to Longyang Road station, still 20–30 minutes (with a metro change or taxi) from the Bund, and it stops running around 22:40. Ride it once for fun with hand luggage; don’t plan your family’s arrival logistics around it.
Taxi rank realities
Official taxis are honest and metered, but the queue after big evening arrival waves can run 30–45 minutes, drivers rarely speak English, and payment is smoothest with Alipay/WeChat Pay — awkward in your first hour in China. Ignore anyone approaching you inside the terminal offering a “taxi”.
Why arrivals pre-book
- Flight tracking: we track your flight, so delays don’t cost you your ride.
- Name-sign pickup in the arrivals hall — no queues, no negotiation.
- Fixed USD price agreed before you fly: tolls, parking and waiting time included.
- Child seats on request, and 7-seaters for family-sized luggage.
Onward planning
Most guests pair their arrival transfer with a Shanghai highlights day or a Zhujiajiao water town half-loop, and many add the Hangzhou day trip mid-stay. If you’re using the 240-hour visa-free transit, remember your onward ticket needs to leave for a third country.
