Pudong Airport (PVG) to Shanghai: Every Option Compared

PVG sits 35–45 km east of the places you actually want to be. After a long-haul landing, your choice of transfer sets the tone for the whole trip — here’s how the maglev, metro, taxi and private car really stack up.

The maglev: ride it, but know its limits

The Shanghai Maglev is a genuine bucket-list ride — 431 km/h on a magnetic cushion. But it only goes to Longyang Road station, still 20–30 minutes (with a metro change or taxi) from the Bund, and it stops running around 22:40. Ride it once for fun with hand luggage; don’t plan your family’s arrival logistics around it.

Taxi rank realities

Official taxis are honest and metered, but the queue after big evening arrival waves can run 30–45 minutes, drivers rarely speak English, and payment is smoothest with Alipay/WeChat Pay — awkward in your first hour in China. Ignore anyone approaching you inside the terminal offering a “taxi”.

Why arrivals pre-book

Landing at Hongqiao (SHA) instead? You’re lucky — it’s far closer to the city (from US$60 per car) and connected to the metro and rail hub in the same complex.

Onward planning

Most guests pair their arrival transfer with a Shanghai highlights day or a Zhujiajiao water town half-loop, and many add the Hangzhou day trip mid-stay. If you’re using the 240-hour visa-free transit, remember your onward ticket needs to leave for a third country.

Land softly in Shanghai

Pre-booked PVG and SHA transfers with name-sign pickup, flight tracking and fixed USD prices — from $70 per car.
