What This Day Feels Like

Mutianyu is the section seasoned travellers pick: fully restored Ming-dynasty wall, dramatic watchtowers every few hundred metres, forested ridgelines in every direction — and a fraction of Badaling’s crowds. Your driver collects you from your Beijing hotel at 08:00 so you arrive just after the cable car opens, when the wall is at its quietest.

This is a private day: linger where you like, skip what you don’t. Most guests walk the classic stretch between towers 14 and 23, break for photos at the steep climb to tower 20, then take the famous toboggan run back down the mountain.

Before You Go

• Wear proper walking shoes — the wall is steep and uneven in places
• Cable car, chairlift and toboggan tickets are bought on site (about ¥120–140 per person)
• Spring and autumn are spectacular; in summer start earlier to beat the heat
• The toboggan closes in rain — the cable car runs both ways as a backup
