What This Day Feels Like

This is the connoisseur’s Shanghai day: less monument, more neighbourhood. The former French Concession is a hundred blocks of plane-shaded streets, art-deco apartment houses and longtang lane communities where laundry still flies overhead — best explored on foot, with your car and driver leapfrogging you between quarters.
