Marco Polo called Suzhou the Venice of the East; UNESCO lists its classical gardens as one of civilisation’s great achievements. The Humble Administrator’s Garden is the masterpiece — five hectares of borrowed views, moon gates and pavilion-dotted ponds designed to look accidental and be anything but.

Add I.M. Pei’s astonishing Suzhou Museum (he was a hometown boy), a boat ride on the 1,400-year-old Grand Canal, the teahouse-lined Pingjiang Road, and a silk mill where you can watch cocoons become cloth — Suzhou’s other 4,000-year-old art form.
