What This Day Feels Like

Guangzhou traded with the world for a thousand years before Shanghai existed, and this day walks through the evidence. The Chen Clan Academy is the finest Lingnan building standing — every ridge of its roof a riot of ceramic operas, every hall filigreed in wood, brick and stone.

Then the city’s real religion: yum cha. A proper teahouse lunch where the dim sum trolleys still roll between tables, followed by the banyan-shaded colonial lanes of Shamian Island and the twin gothic spires of the Sacred Heart Cathedral — granite, and built by French masons with Cantonese hands.
