The part people underestimate

The G-train itself is brilliant — 350 km/h and smooth as glass. The friction is everything around it: getting to Hongqiao station (30–60 min from most hotels), security and ID checks (arrive 45 min early), then on arrival Hangzhou East is still 10 km from West Lake. By the time you’re lakeside, that “45-minute train” has cost close to three hours. A private car leaves your hotel lobby and stops at the lake, the tea fields and Lingyin Temple in one seamless loop.

When the train wins: you’re travelling solo or as a couple with no luggage, you’re staying overnight in Hangzhou, or you simply want the bullet-train experience itself. Ride it one way and let a driver bring you home.
